Winchester Cyclists open the Holiday Inn’s latest sustainable project

Cyclists from the Winchester Cyclists Touring Club took a brief break from an early evening cycle to formally open the Holiday Inn Winchester’s latest sustainable project – a new secure cycle store, that is part of the hotel’s green initiative programme.

Located next to the hotel’s two free electric car recharging points, the new cycle store has been built for both visitors to the hotel and the hotel’s staff, with plans for the purchase of a number of bikes that will be available for hire to guests.

John Spiers of Winchester Cyclists Touring Club, cut the ribbon at the official launch of the new facility and commented: “The hotel is so well placed for cyclists who want to use it as a base to explore the South Downs National Park, which is just five minutes cycle away. If they are coming from other parts of the country then they can stay at the hotel before a good day of cycling and know that they then have a secure store for their bikes on their return.”

The hotel’s general manager Marc Solarz commented: “The hotel was built six years ago along sustainable lines and we are constantly looking at the best green ways to manage every aspect of the business, such as our electric car recharging points, using as much local produce as we can to save on food miles and support the local rural economy. Now we are able to also offer guests and staff this secure cycle store facility.”

“We are also looking forward to working with local, regional and national cycling groups and to encourage this greener way of getting around. We are really very fortunate to be in such a great location close to the South Downs National Park and also close to so many beautiful villages and strikingly beautiful countryside, all within a short cycle ride.”

The 4 star new generation Holiday Inn Winchester has won a number of ‘green’ awards including The Beautiful South Sustainable Award and the PEA (People, Environment, Achievement) Award.
